The main objective of our program is to research, teach and explain the role and importance of science and technology in human development. Although the History of Science only became recognized as a separate academic discipline around the mid-20th century, great advances were made in a short period of time, and the subject is now taught both at undergraduate and graduate levels in many well-known universities around the world. In Turkey, teaching of the History of Science began in the 1950s in Ankara University, and in the 1980s at the Faculty of Literature of Istanbul University. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University established a Department of the History of Science within its Literature Faculty, and accepted undergraduate and graduate students in the 2013-2014 academic year. In this respect, our department has the distinction of being the first of its kind among the foundation universities in Turkey. Our education and research in the History of Science brings in a new approach, as we work together with the foundation established by, and bearing the name of, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin, who is known worldwide for his leading research and publications in the field of Arab and Islamic sciences and technology. The foundation provides scholarships for our students, allowing them to dedicate themselves entirely to their studies. For those in Turkey with an interest in the History of Science this is an unprecedented privilege, one that is perhaps unique in the world. Our goals include: to teach Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Ancient Greek, etc., for the study of the sources in their original languages, as well as modern languages; to increase the number of experts and researchers in the History of Science in our country; to enable the study of the scientific works found in our libraries and belonging to our civilization; to share the results of our researches nationally and internationally. In terms of our educational criteria, we wish to provide a good learning environment and funding, student-centered courses, and a distinctive and participatory approach which will enable students to understand and be able to discuss science and technology along with its cultural background. We base our education on critical thinking, teamwork and the comparative application of research. We aim that our students will learn, not only the favored modern languages, but at least one source language (Arabic, Persian, Ottoman, Ancient Greek, etc.), and be able to apply modern methods to research and publication in the History of Science, particularly regarding the heritage of the Turkish and Islamic civilizations. 30% of the lectures will be in English. Graduates of our courses will be qualified for a wide range of tasks. Primarily they will be able to meet the needs of Turkish universities for academics in the area of the History of Science, technology, medicine, etc.; they may become writers and editors of academic publications; consultants in national or international research institutions; experts in public or private libraries, archives, or museums; at a later date, they may work as teachers in schools as the National Curriculum plans four years of the History of Science as a compulsory or elective subject; and, in co-operation with our University, they may develop individual projects for Technology Parks to research or revive our country’s scientific and technological heritage.
